Maiori



Maiori was founded in the IX century by the prince of Salerno Sicardo with the name of " Rheginna Major " to distinguish it from Minori said " Rheginna Minor ". They had this name until the beginning of the Sveva domination, and then they lost the title " Rheginna ". T his name came from two rivers, one big and one small, but the two towns took the name of Maiuri and Minuri. Maiori was under Amalfi control. It was sacked in 1268 by Pisa. It had a very good commercial navy and it was able to built very big ships. Maiori was decimated by the plague in 1656 and people were only 700, in 1852 they were 4891. The 26th of Ocyober 1954, Maiori was hit by a sea-quake. Maiori is between Minori and Tramonti. It was full of walls and towers, that were built from the IX century. On Ponticchio's hill you can see the ruins of S.Nicola Castle, built under Piccolomini in 1468, it costed to the town about 6000 ducats.
